Personality disorders

Personality disorders are spectrum of  maladaptive traits that influence psychological and emotional disturbance and impair relationship. (Kemberg)
An enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it. ( American Psychiatric Association [APA] )


Types of Personality Disorder By Class

Cluster I: Odd or Eccentric Behaviors

Paranoid Personality

  • Suspicious
  • Distrusful
  • Jealous
  • Secretive
  • Cold and distant (relationships to other)
  • Prefer to work in solitude

Schizoid Personality

  • Loner
  • Cold and aloof
  • Seclusive and socially withdrawn
  • Introverted

Schizotypal Personality

  • Isolated
  • Oddities of thinking and communicating patterns
  • Bizzare magical thinking
  • Hypersensitive
  • May demonstrate paranoid ideas


Cluster II: Dramatic, Erratic or Emotional Behaviors

Antisocial Personality

  • Most common on men
  • Manipulative
  • Law-breakers
  • Impulsive behaviors
  • Dishonest
  • Disloyal and infidelity
  • Selfish (exploit others for material and personal gratification)
  • Hostile and violent

Borderline Personality

  • Commonly on women
  • Chronic feeling of emptiness
  • Intensely poor in interpersional relationship with others
  • More impulsive
  • Self-hostile
  • Lack of control
  • Threat self inorder to gain attention from others (suicidal ideation)
  • Experience brief episodes of paranoia and haluucinations

Histrionic Personality

  • Conspicuously attention-seeker
  • Flamboyant (self-dramatization in order to draw attention from others)
  • Exaggerated on physical expression (overdress, childishness)
  • Pose seduction and intimacy

Narcissistic Personality

  • Pose sense of self-importance and grandiosity
  • Exaggerated self-admirations (I LOVE ME)
  • Prone to depression when failed
  • Lacks of empathy
  • Arrogant and selfish
  • Expect admiration from others
  • High-achievers
  • Oftens fantasize on unlimited powers, brilliance or beauty


Cluster III: Anxious or fearful Behaviors

 Avoidant Personality

  • Intense sensitivity on rejection
  • Escapes intimate relationship (fear starting relationship)
  • Fear on adjustments
  • Hesistant in engaging new activities due to fear of criticism and rejection

Dependent Personality

  • Intensely depend on others to assume his responsibility
  • Lack of sefl-confidence
  • Indecisive
  • Chronic insecurity

Obsessive-Compulsive Personality

  • Perfectionist
  • Preoccupation on orderliness, power and  control
  • Rigid and firm
  • Methodological (attention to details)
  • Intense fear of losing control
  • Reliable and dependable
  • High achivers (do not tolerate failure or defeat)
